Project Overview
Who is the client?
“Everyone has the right to access information and culture. In the Netherlands, public libraries ensure this in an accessible way. Probiblio supports the libraries in their work.” (“Design Brief Taalexplorium”, 2024)
This is the message that Probiblio wants to address to everyone. Taalexplorium (Language-explorium) is a third space that is made for people to gather, relax, chill, and connect. In addition, Probiblio is a provincial full-service organization that has public libraries in North and South Holland. Particularly for our research, we are researching the Taalexplorium in Rijksweg, Den Haag.
Problem Statement
The library environment is characterized by the absence of interaction and social engagement among young adult visitors, thus, preventing the emergence of a lively and inclusive community space. We aim to determine the reasons that lead to this lack of engagement and to develop creative solutions that include the use of a translation machine that promotes meaningful interaction, collaboration, and social connectivity among young adult library users.

Objectives & Goals
The core mission is enhancing the Taalexplorium for young adults. The Taalexplorium has great potential to play a crucial role in social engagement among young adults. Due to this occasion and the opportunity that the library offers, we are going to ensure that the library maintains a vibrant space for young adults.
Objectives
Examine the primary language exploration and expression needs of young adults, such as their language-related activities, interests, and motivations.
Analyze the way young adults understand and use language in their everyday lives. This includes their usage, communication styles, and attitude toward communicative expression.
Identify elements or factors of the library setting that attract visitors and encourage their involvement, concentrating on aspects that are especially appealing to young adult visitors.
Investigate how young adults’ experiences and interactions within the library environment affect their satisfaction and sense of belonging.
User Research
For this research, we chose 6 research methods that will cover preparatory research, secondary research, surveys, interviews, obvservations and focus groups.
Research Questions
· What are the main language exploration and expression needs of young adults?
· How do young adults currently conceive language and interact with it daily?
· What specific elements or factors draw visitors' attention within the library setting?
· How do visitors' experiences and interactions in the library contribute to their overall satisfaction and sense of belonging?
User Research Results
Survey Results
Our findings revealed that among young adults, the prevalent topics of discussion revolve around hobbies, gossip, and relationships, while topics such as politics, philosophical discourse, and academic study tend to be avoided. In terms of communication preferences, face-to-face interaction emerged as the preferred method among this demographic. Overcoming differences in personality and opinions emerged as a significant challenge in interpersonal communication. Notably, nonverbal cues, including body language and facial expressions, were frequently employed to convey messages. Additionally, when expressing emotions nonverbally, writing emerged as the most utilized method among the surveyed individuals.
